September

It has been a busy month since we got back to school.  We have six groups in our classroom - Bright Sparks, Clever Clogs, Clever Cookies, Whizz Kids,
Master Minds and Super Stars.  We work in these groups each day developing our teamwork skills.

Our main themes throughout this month have been 'Myself' and 'Autumn'.  We have learned how to use simple frásaí as Gaeilge to talk about ourselves and engage in Irish conversations with others.  We have learned about our local area of Kilbehenny and have taken part in some Science experiments including the planting of some lettuce seeds and creating a plastic cup telephone system to explore sound as part of our STEM work.  We also partake in Literacy Stations every Monday and Tuesday where we work through spellings, reading, sight words and handwriting. We have focused on how important it is to belong in our class in our Religion lessons and have enjoyed the Strand of 'Games' in PE.  We created beautiful Artwork this month including September Sunsets, All About Me Hoodies and Autumn Trees.

We also took a well-deserved break and walked to the local Mill River for a little paddle in the water while the good weather lasted!

We have been learning how to play the tin-whistle with Séamus and enjoy learning how to play rugby every Monday with Tony and football every Wednesday with Adam.  We enjoyed walking to school two mornings during this term as we try to reduce our carbon emissions.  We took part in Active Stations during European Week of Sport from 25th - 29th September.  2nd class are really looking forward to beginning their 'Do This in Memory' masses in October as they prepare for their Communion Day in May.  A very positive start to the year in our classroom!

October

October has been a lovely month as we prepare for Halloween.  We have made lovely Art pieces including spider webs with spiders and Halloween scenes.  We walked to school on Friday 6th October and really enjoyed chatting to each other along the way.  We celebrated GOAL Jersey Day on Friday, 13th October.  We celebrated Maths week from the 16th - 20th October.  We took part in lots of activities including making 'Shape Monsters' and creating 2D and 3D Shapes out of toothpicks and marshmallows.  Our Second Class students celebrated their Enrolment Mass as part of the 'Do This in Memory' programme.  They had many jobs throughout the mass including the First Reading, Responsorial Psalm, Prayers of the Faithful and bringing up the Gifts.  They are already looking forward to their next mass.  We also have begun listening to our Peace Proms songs which we will learn over the coming months.

November

This month started with the Christmas Shoebox Appeal.  We all brought in shoeboxes which will be sent to children less fortunate than us this Christmas.  We also went to UL to practice for the Peace Proms which we are performing at in January.  We celebrated Science Week from the 13th to the 17th of November.  During this week we explored how to create bubbles, we made a marshmallow catapult and we had a competition to see which group could create the longest paper chain.  We loved taking part in new, fun experiments and explorations!  We also celebrated Wellbeing Week from 20th to the 24th of November.  The Amber Flag committee arranged for us to have Active Stations, a dance class and we enjoyed some yummy smoothies and banana cake!  We had such a fun day in school on Friday the 24th of November as we got ready for the Late Late Toy Show.  We decorated our classroom with our Christmas decorations, made yummy chocolate and marshmallow hats and designed some Christmas jumpers that we thought Patrick Kielty might wear on the night!  We also brought home some yummy treat boxes for the show!  We created some lovely Christmas decorations for the Kilbehenny Christmas Craft Fair.  We have also started practicing our songs for our Christmas concert!

December

December was such a fun month in our classroom as we prepared for Christmas.  We put up our Christmas decorations in our classroom and made some lovely Christmas Art.  We also learned about Christmas traditions in SESE and learned the vocabulary for 'An Nollag' in Gaeilge.  We also prepared for our Christmas Show where we sang Christmas songs and played our Tin-Whistles.  We were all very proud of ourselves for performing so well in front of a big crowd!  We also partook in the MS Readathon for the month of November and by the start of December we had raised €1,627 for MS Ireland.  We wore our Christmas jumpers and raised money for the Laura Lynn Foundation also.  We went to see the pantomime 'Beauty and the Beast' in the Everyman Theatre in Cork.  We made lovely Christmas logs that we got to take home and we had a special visitor to our school - SANTA!!

January

We began our 'Be Active After School' hour on Tuesdays for 6 weeks which we really enjoyed.  We played playground games and developed specific Fundamental Movement Skills each week.  We also took the benefit of some Winter sunshine and checked on our bulbs which we planted back in October.  We were amazed with the growth and learned the importance of Air, Heat and Water for plants to grow.  We celebrated 'Catholic Schools Week' and created some lovely Grandparents' Day cards!  The Road Safety Authority called to our school to explain the Rules of the Road to us and we also were given the chance to practice these rules in their Mini-Village.  To top off the month we performed at the Peace Proms Concert in the UL Arena at the end of the month!

February

To start this month we made St. Brigid's crosses.  We learned about the story of St. Brigid and her cloak.  We also celebrated the start of Lent with Pancake Tuesday and we ate yummy pancakes.  We decided to take something on for the duration of Lent.  As a class we chose to go for a 5 minute walk in our school yard everyday up to our Easter Holidays.  We also celebrated Valentine's Day and made lovely cards for this occasion.

March

Our whole school took part in the RunAroundEurope24 challenge and we recorded how many kilometres we did for the month.  In total the whole school ran/walked 4,004km and reached Ankara in Turkey!  We celebrated Engineer's Week also and as part of this we visited a Wind Turbine in Glenroe.  We learned how the Wind Turbine generates electricity. We also celebrated World Book Day, Mother's Day, World Down Syndrome Day and St. Patrick's Day.  Our Student Council organised an Easter Egg Hunt for us all also which we loved.  We could never say no to some chocolate!
