SEPTEMBER

It has been a busy month in 5th and 6th class and we have all settled back into school for the 2023/24 school year!
We have created some great projects in History on some Aussie Rules Players, in Science on Electricity and in Geography on the countries in the Rugby World Cup! We are also running our very own Last Man Standing Competition in our class which has been great fun!
In Drama we got very creative as we stepped into the Marketing aspect of life as we created our very own products, based on phones, hoverboards, fizzy drinks and gaming consoles. We created our own company names, logos, slogans and finally a very entrancing 30 second TV advertisement which we performed for our class! We were very persuasive. We also have created great artistic pieces, and our self-portraits have been a great addition to our classroom.
This month we have been using lots of Gaeilge neamhfhoirmiúil in the classroom and on the yard, and we have started a 5th vs 6th Class Tables Competition which has been very competitive! In English, we have been creating KWLs and have completed some great recount and report writing pieces, and we have started Stations twice a week which has been going really well!
We have loved starting Rugby Training with Tony, and Tin Whistle Practice with Séamus, which we love! We are also partaking in European Week of Sport where our 6th Class are running stations for the whole school every day and everyone is really enjoying it!
Finally, we have been delighted to start back after-school training and we are really looking forward to getting back into our matches!

OCTOBER

October has been a very busy month in 5th and class this year.
We are now finished our rugby training sessions with Tony and we put all our learning and skills together, as we played in the Galbally rugby tournament, which was so much fun!

We have been training hard after school for football and we really enjoyed the mini 7s blitzes. Our boys team competed really well and our girls team proved very successful on their day as they won all their games and were crowned South champions!
They will proudly go on to represent KBNS the county finals in November, which we are all really looking forward to and we wish them the very best of luck!

In other sporting achievements, two of our 6th class girls were selected to be a part of the South Limerick football team that will compete in the Larkin Shield against the sissy team. Massive congratulations to Aoife C and Aoife N, we are so proud of you, and we wish you the best luck!

In the classroom, there has been lots going on too! We entered the Reel life science competition as a whole school where we all came together and learned about sound and produced a video on how sounds travels and how it works.
We did a massive worm wave with every pupil in the school to show how sound travels in vibrations along soundwaves, and it turned out really cool!

Maths Week also fell in October and we got really involved in it by doing maths activities every day which were really fun! We made shape monsters, created structures, using marshmallows and toothpicks, we threw beanbags into hula hoops to solve maths challenges in a race against the other class, we all engage in a maths quiz that was based on the GAA and we did times tables challenges too! It was a great week and we were really able to see how Maths can be fun!

We also spent lots of time learning about the Māori and creating projects from our new knowledge and understanding. We presented these to our class and learned new facts from the other projects!

In the lead up to Halloween, we made spooky skeletons and we painted pumpkins. We also use our imagination and creativity to come up with spooky Halloween stories!
In the last week before midterm, the Student Council held a Halloween bake sale and then used their profits to organise a movie day for us which was a lovely way to finish off the month! While we watched the movie we also finished painting our pumpkins which we got to take home! We all also dressed up in school on the last day and had a parade and assembly, which was so much fun!

We wish you all a safe and happy Halloween!

NOVEMBER

This month was another great one in KBNS and a very successful one for our girls Mini 7s team, who represented the South in the County Finals in Rathkeale where they played three tough games against the representatives from the East, West and City and won all three games! They have made history in our school and we are so proud of all the work that our girls put in and their consistent and excellent performances all year!

In other sporting achievements, two of our 6th Class students played an integral part of the South Football team that qualified for the Larkin Shield final and they then got the well deserved opportunity to play in the LIT Gaelic Grounds. This was a great achievement for the two girls and they both gave it their all and they provided excellent performances. Although it was not their day, we are all super proud of them!

Both Science Week and Wellbeing Week also fell during November and they were very fun! During Science Week we did lots of fun experiments and activities, including making bubbles on our tables and making marshmallow catapults! For Wellbeing Week our Amber Flag created a very positive environment for us all! They made smoothies and banana squares for us all, and had a Pet Day!

In the classroom w
e learned a lot about the GAA in history and we researched different stadiums all over Ireland an created projects on  them! In English we also wrote explanation texts all about the GAA which was very interesting!

We have also have had Handball and gymnastics this month which we are loving! Our boys also had an Olympic Handball tournament which they really enjoyed and now we have started practicing for our Christmas play, learning our lines and new songs, and we are really looking forward to putting it all together!

DECEMBER

December was a very eventful month in our classroom
We have also been busy in the classroom learning all about length in Maths and narrative writing in English. We have been using our imagination to write really creative and interesting stories! Our 5th and 6th girls played their first Olympic Handball tournament and they qualified for the County finals! We have also concluded our Handball with Michael and Gymnastics with Gill which we loved! We are all getting ready for Christmas and have been learning about An Nollaig as Gaeilge too!

In music we practiced, performed and recorded our 'KBNS' version of ‘When I Play for the County’. We also spent lots of time practicing the tin whistle and performed ‘Amhrán na bhFiann’ in our classroom for the younger classes, and we also concluded our school Christmas concert with it!

Our very first KBNS All Stars began this year, where just like the PWC All Stars, we all got awarded a position on the All Stars Team to recognise all of our achievements in the school so far. We had a whole school parade with mascots in the yard which was so much fun!

After learning about the GAA stadiums last month, we also spent time in the classroom constructing Croke Park out of LEGO and it turned out great!

Throughout this month and last we were very busy getting prepared for our Christmas play but all our work paid off as we preformed the Late Late Toy Show and it was so much fun and the crowd seemed to really enjoy it!
We had many acts on the show! We began the show with our own rendition of the song 'We're the Kids in America' to make it 'We're the Kids in Kilbehenny'!
We then had some toy ambassadors, a sheep shearing contest, a jiving scandal and special appearances from the Ob, The 2 Johnnies, the Limerick hurlers, some cocky soccer players and a crazy Donegal fan.
We also had brilliant performances of 'The Way I Am' and 'This is the Life'. It was a thoroughly enjoyable night for all and we are so delighted with how it turned out.
We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

JANUARY

January was another great month as we all settled back to school for the New Year! We have been really busy and we learned all about ice and glaciers in Geography and then did a Science experiment to see the effects that salt has on ice! When the salt hardened on the ice we painted on our ice blocks to make cool patterns! It was so interesting to see how the salt reacted with the ice and we were able to understand why salt is put on the roads during the icy weather to make it less slippy!

We have also started back swimming in Fermoy every Friday which has been lots of fun and we got to try a Taekwondo session with Schools Fitness Ireland! We have also commenced our annual Indoor Hurling Championship in the halla during lóin. We played a few practice games before separating into our championship teams: Úibh Fháilí, Dún na nGall, Ciarraí agus Maigh Eo.

To set us up for the New Year we all made vision boards on the Chromebooks where we put together lots of photos of our personal visions and goals for 2024! We were also very busy in English where we studied poetry and worked on our rhyming and poetry techniqques and in Music where we  practiced and rehearsed our songs and actions for Peace Proms where we performed alongside the Crossborder Orchestra of Ireland in an unforgettable event in the University of Limerick!

We are now busy preparing for our Confirmation next month which we are really looking forward to!

FEBRUARY

February was very busy in our classroom as we prepared for the highlight of our month; our Confirmation!
We spent lots of time learning about the sacrament of Confirmation and preparing songs and music for our special day where we welcomed the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit into our lives!
The week before the Confirmation we went on a retreat to Glengarra Woods where we spent time thinking and reflecting outdoors.
We made our Confirmation with Angelsboro and on the day we performed 'Hold Back the River' by singing and playing the tin whistle and it was lovely!

During Lent we also took up an 'Active Action' where we did different activities every day to stay active. We did different versions of the 'Sally Up Challenge' and ran laps around the school for the 'Run Around Europe Challenge' where we combined our laps with the other classes, running 1,000km in total!

This month we also celebrated Internet Safety Day and our 5th Class girls played their Indoor Hurling Tournament in Martinstown.
Both our boys and girls teams played in the FAI 5s Soccer tournament this month as well and did really well! The girls also qualified for the Olympic Handball finals which they played in UL.
